ABHIVYAKTI: B.D. UNIYAL ‘PARVATIYA’ SMRITI SAMAROH

COMMEMORATING THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF B.D.UNIYAL

A conclave was organized on 08.10.2022 at the Buransh auditorium situated in H.R.D.C., Kumaon University to commemorate the birth centenary of Sh. Bishnu Dutt Uniyal.

 

At the conclave, the books ‘Parvatiya Samachar Patra aur Uttarakhand mein Svatantrayottar Patrakarita’ (authored by Dr. Neeraj Sah) and ‘Parvatiya: Smrityon ke Prangan se: Ek Sankalan’ (Edited by Dr. Seema Uniyal Mishra) were launched.

 

At the beginning of the conclave, the Honorary Secretary of the Trust, Rachana Joshi Issar (Advocate) informed the audience about the activities of the Trust.

 

Estimable persons belonging to the fields of journalism, education, and social service presented their thoughts on Bishnu Dutt Uniyal, his ever-relevant vision of journalism, his personality, and enduring contributions to society.

 

The conclave was presided over by Prof. Laxman Singh Bisht ‘Batrohi’, former literary editor of ‘Parvatiya’, acclaimed writer and former Head of the Hindi department at Kumaon University.

Sh. Naveen Joshi from Lucknow, senior writer, journalist and former editor of ‘Hindi Hindustan’ enlightened the audience with his views on ethics in journalism.

 

Eminent historian and educationist Prof. Shekhar Pathak provided a detailed introduction of Bishu Dutt Uniyal and the journey of the ‘Parvatiya’ newspaper, throwing light on its salient contributions to post-independence journalism.

 

Other speakers included Prof. Ajay Rawat (environmentalist and historian), Narayan Singh Jantwal (former MLA), Prof Girish Ranjan Tiwari (Head of the journalism department at the Kumaon university), who had personal interactions with Bishnu Dutt Uniyal. Dr. Neeraj Sah, Sh. Pankaj Tiwari (Aarohi NGO) also spoke at the event.  

 

An audio-visual message by Sh. Tapish Chandra Nautiyal, I.Fo.S. was played. Sh. Nautiyal was a student and later teacher at the Himalaya Adhyayan evam Vichar Kunj, Kotdwar, established by Bishnu Dutt Uniyal, where aspirants of various competitive examinations were given study material and accommodation.

 

Sh. Nautiyal highlighted an important aspect of Bishnu Dutt Uniyal’s later life which shows his enduring commitment to the betterment of society and the hills.  

 

A short film based on an autobiographical chapter written by Bishu Dutt Uniyal was also presented before the audience. The script was written by Dr. Deven Mewari, the illustrations were done by Sh. Sachin Kulshreshta, voiceover was by Sh. Abhishek Kankhariyal, concept by Sh. Svarit Uniyal Mishra, and production by Dr. Seema Uniyal Mishra. 

Prof. Neerja Tandon ensured the seamless conduct of the conclave as the master of ceremonies.

 

To conclude the conclave, the Chairperson of the Trust, Dr. Seema Uniyal Mishra, gave the vote of thanks.  

 

People who had been associated with ‘Parvatiya’ were felicitated with shawls and mementos as a token of appreciation. Esteemed trustees of the Trust graced the occasion, including Cdr. I.C. Sharma (Retd.), and Sh. Arun Issar.

 

The conclave was well attended by residents of the city, loyal readers of ‘Parvatiya’, students of Kumaon University; the attendees came in spite of heavy rainfall and remained seated in rapt attention for the better part of the day. The conclave concluded with lunch for all the attendees. 

 

The commemoration brought back the memory of Bishnu Dutt Uniyal.
