Sh. Bishnu Dutt Uniyal was a son of the Himalayas who emerged from the mountains and scaled the heights of success.
Born on 30.05.1921 in the remote village of Awai, Udaipur Patti (Paudi district), he had to assist his mother in both domestic and commercial activities [such as ploughing the fields, taking the animals for grazing, and operating their flour mill (gharat)] after his father passed away when he was only twelve years old. However, even while he was helping his mother, Sh. Uniyal successfully completed his primary and middle school studies at the village school. Unfortunately, the family did not have enough resources to send him to Dehradun for further studies.
With a desire to improve the circumstances of his family and himself, he left home and reached Lahore, covering some portions of the long journey on foot. There, he hoped to find some work and educate himself. He was successful in achieving his goal. While variously working as a domestic help, attendant to a dentist, manager of a dairy-bakery, he not only completed his matriculation, but also passed the highest qualification of Prabhakar offered by the Punjab University (1940). In the following year, he passed the intermediate and B.A. (First year) examination. During this time, he also learnt shorthand and typing.
In 1944, he bid adieu to Lahore and returned to the hills. In the context of job losses following the end of the Second World War, he dabbled in various jobs at Dehradun, Delhi, and Almora.
In a cruel twist of fate, he contracted tuberculosis in 1950. For his treatment, he was admitted to the Bhowali Sanitorium. Even in that frail condition, he didn’t give up on education and completed his graduation while recovering from the deadly disease.
After making a successful recovery, Sh. Uniyal returned to Almora. For some time, he worked as a teacher of Commerce at the Ramsey Inter College.
However, by this time he had decided that he would pursue journalism. With this aim in mind, he made way to the great city of Bombay. Even though his stay was educative in several ways, he was not successful in establishing himself there. As a result, he returned to Almora and it is here that the publication of the weekly Parvatiya newspaper began in 1953. After graduating from the Hand press to a proper printing press, Sh. Uniyal moved the Parvatiya newspaper first to Ramnagar and then to Nainital. The Newspaper flourished and gained popularity as did its owner Sh. Bishnu Dutt Uniyal.
It was in Nainital, in the year 1974, that Sh. Bishnu Dutt Uniyal established the Parvatiya Charitable Trust [B.D, Uniyal (Parvatiya) Charitable Trust] which is a registered public charitable trust.
Around the year 1986, due to his deteriorating health and medical advice, Sh. Uniyal, then a sexagenarian, shifted his work base from a place of high altitude like Nainital to foothills of Garhwal Himalayas in Kotdwar, near his place of birth, to continue the Trust activities. With tremendous efforts, he established a hostel there that provided residential facilities and an academic atmosphere to students of the region conducive to their adequately preparing for various examinations. It was his heartfelt desire to ensure that people of the hills, who were otherwise sincere and enterprising, should not suffer due to lack of access to resources.
Unfortunately, while Sh. Bishnu Dutt Uniyal was still endeavoring to take this project to its full potential, he left for his heavenly abode in Delhi on 16.11.1988, survived by his wife (now deceased) and daughter, the present Chairperson of the Trust.
His benevolent spirit still guides the Parvatiya Charitable Trust which, silently but surely, carries on the good work initiated by its beloved founder.

30 मई 1921 को आवई गांव, उदयपुर पट्टी (पौड़ी गढ़वाल ज़िले) में नौ लोगों के परिवार में उनका जन्म हुआ। १२ वर्ष की आयु में पिता के निधन के बाद ग्रामीण जीवन में खेती बाड़ी और घर के घराट पर मां और बहनों की काम में सहायता करते बिष्णु दत्त उनियाल ने सातवीं कक्षा तक निकट के गांव चमकोटखाल के विद्यालय में शिक्षा प्राप्त की। आगे की पढ़ाई के लिए देहरादून जाना पड़ता, लेकिन आर्थिक कठिनाइयों के कारण वे वहां जा ना सके।
अपनी पारिवारिक स्तिथी में सुधार लाने के लिए, और शिक्षा का महत्व समझते हुए, वे लाहौर की ओर निकल पड़े। कहीं पदयात्रा करते, और कहीं रेलगाड़ी लेते हुए, भूखे-प्यासे वे लाहौर में अलग-अलग प्रकार के काम करते हुए शिक्षा ग्रहण करने लगे। पहले अपनी मैट्रिक की पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद, उन्होंने 1939 पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय द्वारा प्रस्तावित "प्रभाकर" की उच्चतम योग्यता प्राप्त की। उन्होंने इंटर पास किया और बी.ए. (प्रथम वर्ष)। इस दौरान उन्होंने शॉर्टहैंड और टाइपिंग भी सीखी।
उनके जीवन सफर का एक पड़ाव आया 1944 में, जब वे लाहौर से देहरादून लौट आए। लाहौर प्रवास के दौरान, उन्होंने न केवल शिक्षा और ज्ञान में संवर्धन किया, वरन जीवन में पहली बार पर्वतों से दूर, एक अलग प्रकार के समाज और उसके लोगों की सोच को समझा |
द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध में होने वाली भर्ती में वे सेना के मिलिट्री अकाउंट्स में नियुक्त हो गए। उन्होंने पहले देहरादून और फिर दिल्ली में ये नौकरी की। तत्पश्चात वे अल्मोड़ा में शौर्ट हैंड के प्रशिक्षक बने। अल्मोड़ा में ही अपना ‘हिंदी संकेत लिपि विद्यालय’ खोलने हेतु उन्होंने इस पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया।
1950 में नियति ने उन्हें एक अलग मोड़ पर लाकर खड़ा कर दिया। उस समय असाध्य माने जाने वाले क्षय रोग (tuberculosis) से वे ग्रस्त हो गए। जुझारूपन से उन्होंने अपना इलाज नितांत अकेलेपन में स्वयं भवाली सैनिटोरियम में करवाया। इस अवस्था में भी वहां रहते हुए उन्होंने द्वितीय वर्ष बी. ए. की परीक्षा पूर्ण की। इस दौरान लिखने पढ़ने एवं अपने विचारों में सजगता जागृत करने की यात्रा में उन्हें लेखन और दूसरों की परेशानियां को स्वर देने में और रुचि हुई। वे सेनिटोरियम को अपना ‘विश्वविद्यालय’ कहा करते थे।
रोगमुक्त होकर कुछ समय अल्मोड़ा के रामज़े इंटर कॉलेज में उन्होंने शिक्षक के रूप में कार्य किया| यहां क्षेत्र के प्रगतिशील युवाओं के संपर्क में आने से समाजवादी और साम्यवादी विचारों से उनका परिचय हुआ। सभी विचारधाराओं को परखते हुए, उन्होंने हमेशा व्यक्तिगत अनुभवों के साथ संतुलित रूप में उन्हें ग्रहण किया।
इस समय तक उन्होंने तय कर लिया था कि वे पत्रकारिता करेंगे। इस विचार को ध्यान में रखते हुए, वे बंबई गए और पुनः अल्मोड़ा आकर अपने स्वयं के समाचार पत्र का स्वप्न साकार करने में लग गए। नतीजतन, वह अल्मोड़ा लौट आए और यहीं पर साप्ताहिक पर्वतीय पत्र का प्रकाशन 1953 में शुरू हुआ। पर्वतीय पत्र के पहले छह संस्करण आगरा स्थित उजाला प्रेस से छपे थे। कुछ समय बाद, श्री उनियाल ने कुमाऊं कुमुद के मालिक, प्रेम बल्लभ जोशी, से हाथ प्रेस और टाइप प्राप्त किया| पर्वतीय पहले अल्मोड़ा के प्रकाशित हुआ, फिर रामनगर और अंततः नैनीताल से, जहां से समाचार पत्र 1986 तक निरंतर छपता रहा।
कुमाऊं क्षेत्र में पर्वतीय अत्यधिक लोकप्रिय हुआ, क्योंकि यह निर्भय और स्पष्ट रूप से आम लोगों की चिंताओं और आकांक्षाओं को व्यक्त करने का साहस रखता था। स्थानीय विषयों के अतिरिक्त, अपने पाठकों के लिए राष्ट्रीय, और यहां तक कि अंतरराष्ट्रीय, समाचार लाने की दिशा में एक समर्पित प्रयास किया गया। पर्वतीय पत्र में न सिर्फ समस्याओं का वर्णन होता था, वरन उनके निदान के लिए सटीक एवं व्यावहारिक सुझाव भी देता था। बिष्णु दत्त उनियाल की सटीक लेखनी पैनी हास्य व्यंगात्मक धार लिए थी, परंतु जीवन से मिले संघर्षों से कटुता न समेट दूसरों के हित में कार्य करना ही उन्होंने समाचार पत्र और अपना उद्देश्य माना।
१९६३ में उनका विवाह सावित्री रावत से हुआ, जो एक शिक्षिका थीं। उनके जीवन का वो संबल बनी।
1974 में सामाजिक हित के शुभ उद्देश्य से उन्होंने पर्वतीय चेरिटेबल ट्रस्ट की स्थापना करी। अपनी स्वर्जित संपत्ति का लगभग आधा भाग उन्होंने ट्रस्ट स्थापित करने के लिए दान स्वरूप दे दिया। ट्रस्ट ने मेधावी और निर्धन छात्रों की वित्तीय सहायता करने के अलावा, क्षेत्र के कई लेखकों और साहित्यकारों को सम्मानित किया।
उनके बिगड़ते स्वास्थ्य के कारण, उन्हें नैनीताल जैसी अधिक ऊंचाई जगह पर न रहने की सलाह दी गई थी परिणामस्वरूप, 1986 वह गढ़वाल हिमालय में कोटद्वार चले आए| यहां ट्रस्ट गतिविधियों को नया रूप दिया| हिमालय अध्ययन एवं विचार कुंज को चलाने के विचार से उसके निर्माण व व्यवस्था में जुट गए। वहाँ, उन्होंने एक छात्रावास की स्थापना की जो विभिन्न परीक्षाओं की तैयारी कर रहे क्षेत्र के छात्रों को आवासीय सुविधाएं और एक अनुकूल शैक्षणिक माहौल मिलता था।
उनकी इच्छा समाज के सभी वर्गों की उन्नति और विशेषकर पर्वतीय क्षेत्र के युवाओं को उच्च शिक्षा, प्रतियोगिता परीक्षा, एवं जीवन स्तर में सुधार लाने का अवसर देने की थी, जिससे न केवल क्षेत्र वरन देश की उन्नति में वे संलग्न हों।
इसी दौरान, लोगों एवं परस्थितियों से प्राप्त हुए अपने विभिन्न अनुभवों के आधार पर वे सर्ववाद संबंधी अपने विचारों और विशिष्ट वाद की विवेचना लिखते; और इस क्रम के आरंभ में उन्होंने अपनी जीवनयात्रा का वर्णन अपने ही शब्दों में किया था।
इस निर्भीक, उदार हृदयी, कर्मयोगी का शरीर 16 नवंबर 1988 को पंचतत्व में विलीन हो गया।
हिमालय पर्वतश्रृंखला की गोद में उत्पन्न हुए बिष्णु दत्त उनियाल ने जीवन की विषमताओं को आत्मविश्वास, परिश्रम, व साहस से जूझते हुए सफलता में परिवर्तित किया।
