After completing more than twenty years of continuous publication and becoming the  first daily newspaper of its kind, Sh. Uniyal had successfully established ‘Parvatiya’ as  pioneer among newspapers being published from the hill regions of erstwhile Uttar  Pradesh. A part of the entailing economic gains, in his firm opinion, had to be ploughed  in for social good. In his own words, any wealth in excess of what was required for  satisfying familial needs, ought to be put to the service of society.

 

Even though Sh. Uniyal, in his personal capacity, had been consistently contributing  for the welfare of the needy people who approached him seeking help, he felt the  desire to formalize and streamline his spirit of returning to society what he believed he  gained from it. Having witnessed from close quarters the hardship of lack of resources,  he desired to see that the upcoming youth and other professionals should not be  deprived of opportunities due to socio-economic constraints.

With this ideal in mind, he established the Parvatiya Charitable Trust in 1974, and  registered it as a public charitable trust. The initial corpus comprised of approximately  one half of his own wealth and property. 

 

The Trust has felicitated many writers of the region, apart from providing them with  financial assistance. Scholarships to meritorious and needy students have been  disbursed consistently over years. Initially, the trust had also opened a hostel for  journalists at Nainital which had to be subsequently discontinued owing to various  reasons including lack of optimal utilization throughout the year.

Main Aims and Objects of the Trust

• Financial aid and scholarships to students, sportspersons, physically  handicapped, sick, poor and needy members of general public. 

• Opening educational institutes, libraries, institutes for sports activities, hostels,  hospitals, sanatoriums for members of the general public anywhere in India.

• Any other charitable activity in public interest.

Even after the death of Sh. B.D. Uniyal in 1988, the B.D. Uniyal (Parvatiya) Charitable Trust continued the tradition established by him. The charitable activities of the Trust  are being carried out for the benefit of the general public via the exclusive use of its  own accumulated resources. In its four-and-a-half-decade history, the Trust has never  taken donations from any source for any purpose. 

 

The primary focus of the Trust has been on the educational scholarships to needy but  meritorious students and scholars, along with financial and medical assistance to the  needy members of general public. 

 

Indigent widows, differently-abled persons, persons in need of financial assistance for  medical treatment have also been the recipients of financial aid. The Trust has played  a key role in supporting talented but poor local folk artists and writers. 

Activities such as holding Seminars and Lecture programs to generate awareness  towards the issues of general public importance like the need to preserve and  propagate the traditional Indian classical and folk music instruments etc. have also  been undertaken.
